FUELS MANAGEMENT

Fuels Management is critical to managing landscapes, particularly in areas where high wildfire risk poses a threat to values. Managing fuels involves a range of activities aimed at creating fire resilient landscapes, creating fire adapted communities, and creating fuel breaks that aid in safe and effective wildfire response. Fuels treatments mitigate wildfire risk by managing the amount and distribution of fuels, such as invasive annual grasses, encroaching trees and shrubs and removing dead and downed trees. This can include using mechanical methods to thin and remove vegetation, prescribed burning, and chemical and biological treatments used to remove invasive species that pose a wildfire risk. Effective fuels management is essential for protecting public safety, protecting and restoring natural resources, and maintaining the ecological health of BLM lands.
