FIRE ECOLOGY

Wildfire in a forest

The Fire Ecology topic area provides guidance on monitoring, plant/fire relationships, landscape fire ecology, fire regimes, and fuels treatment design. Issues and challenges in this area include invasive plants, altered landscapes, restoration, land health, post-fire management, post-fire response, and disturbance interactions among others. Fire Ecology also coordinates with the Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) program, Forestry, Range, and other Bureau programs to integrate monitoring, treatments, and planning.  Climate change and the science of fire ecology overlap, specifically the considerations of current and future disturbance trends, novel ecosystems, and changes in species distributions.
