Selected Bibliography of Certain Vertebrate Techniques

The purpose of this bibliography is to provide biologists with a basic set of references with which to initiate faunal surveys of vertebrates. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but should adequately introduce basic field techniques. Emphasis was given to collecting, preserving, marking, skeletonizing, sexing, and anesthetizing specimens. Other items of potential interest were included, though they are clearly of secondary import -and their coverage is far from complete.

Most titles listed were acquired through perusal of the tables of contents of major vertebrate oriented journals. As a result, many papers containing useful methods were undoubtedly overlooked if their titles did not contain key words. Many additional titles may be accumulated by examining the references cited by the papers listed herein.

When referring to the "Subject Index," one should also consult ancillary categories as many subjects may be listed under various sections. An example is that novel collecting techniques may be discussed in papers dealing with marking and/or anesthesia. An additional point to remember is that many techniques are applicable to all groups (e.g., skeletonization, radiography, clearing and staining), but are referenced only with the group mentioned in the title.
