Certain Theological properties of bentonites from the Western United States vary with changes in the ratio of exchangeable Na/CaMg. Physical properties such as viscosity, water loss and liquid limit are all functions of relative amounts of exchangeable sodium, calcium and magnesium ions. The research reported on in this study also indicates that the blending of bentonites with low yields and high water losses isnot feasible with bentonite having properties less than those of a Na rich bentonite.
